Chipata’s Link to Malawi Trade
The ministry locates Mwami approximately 24 kilometres from Chipata in Zambia’s Eastern Province. Across the border is Mchinji in Malawi. Its corridor profile places the crossing on the Nacala connection linking trade across Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique.
For a clearing request, the actual route still matters: name the port and road leg used rather than treating every shipment from Malawi as a Nacala shipment.

Different Cargo Needs Different Preparation
A vehicle purchase, a vehicle export and a truck carrying agricultural goods are not the same clearing request. For a vehicle, begin with the invoice and ownership or export record. For non-vehicle cargo, product-specific requirements and service scope need separate review.
A vehicle entering Zambia to remain here needs an import assessment. An outward vehicle journey requires the relevant export procedure, while a commercial consignment passing through Zambia needs its onward route recorded.
Your Vehicle Documents and Costs
For Mwami, send the vehicle invoice, export or registration record and relevant road consignment documents. Confirm whether the vehicle is entering from Malawi or leaving Zambia, its final destination, and planned arrival at the Mwami–Mchinji crossing.
Send only documents relating to the vehicle being assessed. If another agent has already started a declaration, do not open a duplicate filing. For an existing Ultima request, check your case instead.

How far is Mwami from Chipata?

Is Mchinji a different route?
Mchinji is the Malawi counterpart to Mwami in Zambia. Together they form the Mwami–Mchinji border crossing.
When was the one-stop border launched?
COMESA’s programme progress report records the launch in December 2022. Older project descriptions of a two-stop arrangement predate that development.
Can I upload maize or other goods invoices to the vehicle tool?
No. The current online assessment accepts documents relating to the vehicle being assessed. Agricultural goods or mixed cargo need their own review of documents, permits where applicable and service scope.
Does using the Nacala Corridor mean my cargo passed through Nacala port?
No. A corridor describes the wider transport connection. State the actual origin, port if used, road route and destination for your own consignment.
